The true essence of what sampling and hiphop culture really is. California producer DJ Shadow’s undoubted magnum opus came out in 1996 on UK based hiphop and electronic label Mo’ Wax.
DJ Shadow created Endtroducing…. inside a two year timespan between 1994 and 1996, using minimal equipment including a Akai MPC 60 MK II drum machine, a turntable and a tape recorder, whilst the record itself consists of only samples.
Sampling everyone from Metallica, Björk, Tangerine Dream, Jeru The Damaja, David Axellrod to Finnish jazz fusion bassist Pekka Pohjola, this record made sure to push all creative boundaries available.
Since there is no MC rapping, the focus lands fully on DJ Shadow and his insanity on the wheels of steel while the instrumentals change in tone from wild and rowdy to more mellow.
One of Hiphops first ever instrumental albums, this laid the groundwork for future full length instrumental albums by J Dilla, Madlib, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Company Flow, Nujabes among many more.
