Breakbeat records also known as breaks have been a staple in hiphop production and sampling since the days of the 80’s when Luis “Breakbeat Luo” Flores started Ultimate Brakes And Beats in 1986, since then it’s been no new sight seeing a compilation of grooves and beats on a compilation album with the intend to sample.
Beat Goes Public Records also known as BGP for short is a record label based in the UK that specializes in rare groove, funk, soul and jazz. The whole premise of BGP is to reissue older 7″inch singles and make breakbeat compilations that have been sampled in Hiphop.
Super Breaks is BGP’s signature breakbeat compilation series and this first installment features songs by Isaac Hayes, The Detroit Emeralds, Syl Johnson, The Emotions, Otis Reading and Carla Thomas, Lowell Fulson and Jean- Jacques Perrey among others.
BGP would continue to make three different volumes of “Super Breaks”, volume 2 in 2000, volume 3 in 2002, and a return to the series titled Super Breaks: Return To The Old School in 2009, along with spinoffs that came off from the compilations, such as Westbound Breaks.
